Advice re sanding down a wooden hull

Well the boats upside down, the paintwork is generally ok. However it could be a lot smoother. So looking to wet and dry the hull bottom, leaving the sides shiny. I was wondering about using a sander and what should i buy? I'm thinking 800 grit first and then a 1500 grit. Anybody who has done this task care to advise please?

Thanks Ian. I was at Dave Winders last week and he said the same. In fact he was sanding down his latest Fireball plug by hand. So start at 400, then work up was the advice.
