Sorry Ian, only jut saw this. No doubt, Jim is exceptional, hands the size of dinner plates but that extra sensory perception that all the Champions seem to possess. He could also down pints with the best of them. This pic was at the Winters, Oxford I believe, 2007 ish. Jim had been experimenting with some short battens which stopped well before the luff. Jim won the event in the Gosling and had the rest of the FRP owners scratching their heads in disbelief. I had popped down to Kevin's a few weeks earlier and the hull was being polished to within an inch of it's life, Devil is in the detail!
Unfortunately the rule was quickly updated to ensure battens should be full length and be tensile enough to keep the material in tension.
I have tried to recollect some of Jim's most dramatic wins but his style was pretty simple, good starts, stay ahead of the fleet and don't do anything too left field.
