Halyard threading harder than Tetris?

Hello all, unfortunately my Halyard blew through on my last sailing outing. I have been trying to re-thread a guide line through the mast to draw the main halyard through after. I can get the guide line down as far as the goose neck (I can hear the piece of metal attached to the line clanging around in the mast), but I just cant get it back past here despite using gravity, shaking extensively, magnets and as many expletives as I know.

So I was wondering if anyone knows what is going on in there? Its a Selden Mast and I don't want to take the foot off the mast to look as the bolts are fairly threaded - so that will be another thing to do before sailing.

Anyone have any ideas? Tricks? Methods? Magic?

taking the heel plug off does help.

turn the mast on its head and feed in from the foot?

have you got a used wire haliard or old haliard in the " old bits" box that we all have- feeds on pressure rather than gravity
