I had a Gold-maxx sail that I got on quite well with untill a split appeared and had it repaired by a local sailmaker. Then another split - also repaired. Then another. All in the lower part of the sail.
After split No4 I ended up buying a new sail. Is this a feature of Gold-max cloth and the reason why it isnt used any more?
I believe HD still use the MAXX cloth but it cannot be sourced in gold anymore only black, i know this because i enquired about a new sail a while back.
Your story isn't unusual for laminate sails as they delaminate, get sun damage and shrink! so naturally they get weaker and tear along the creases. Some refer to this as them going over the 'cliff' when they have a series of failures until you dispose of them. You can still get Dacron sails which don't suffer from this but do gradually decline in their performance but ultimately you can use them almost forever.
