Midland Double Bill Starter,

Wind, Wobbles and Winners at Carsington & Blithfield

The 2025 Allen, CB Coverstore Midland Series kicked off with back-to-back belters at Carsington and Blithfield, offering thrills, spills, and more capsizes than a Friday night in Wetherspoons.

First stop: Carsington.

With a fleet full of hopefuls and a forecast that read “gusty with a chance of humiliation,” the stage was set. Michael Sims, back sailing Solos made light work of the shifting breeze winning 3 of the 4 races.

Behind him, Andy Wilde from Ogston SC and Jonathan Swain from Carsington battled bravely for the remaining podium spots. Chris lead the last race (wind was now 25knts) after a port flyer but dropped it in on the first run! Ending his day. Competitors discovering that wind shifts on Carsington are as predictable as a British summer.

Next up was Blithfield.

Fresh from their recovery (and possibly physio), the fleet reconvened in Staffordshire for another bout of tactical torment. Jonathan the new Rep had again ordered the wind and it was blowing.

Chris Brown of Draycote showed that consistency beats chaos, taking top honours. Jonathan Swain, could have won the event but for some unlucky moments, came second. Jamie Cuxson took third.

Both venues delivered a heady mix of competitive racing, tricky breezes, and that special kind of camaraderie that only comes from watching your mate turtle his Solo while shouting “I meant to do that.”

The Midland Series is heating up faster than a Lycra wetsuit in July. Next stop on the Midland tour is Barnt Green on the 10th of May.

After looking at this photo I can see why Richard has capsized the last two weekends, he sails looking backwards! Great photo!
