Mast and wooden Solo's

Hello, I have a 1970s solo that I love, but during Sunday racing I have been left way behind everyone, almost by a whole lap of the course. I have now treated myself to a new Edge sail that has made a massive difference to my pointing and speed. I am now just under 10 minutes from the main pack.

At the club there was comment that I had no mast rake, so looking at the tuning guides I have adjusted it but can't get it anywhere near what the guides say,

I was wondering what type of masts other people use. Mine has a needlespar, would another brand and model make a differences? I can see improvement each time I sail so it could be down to just racing on a river instead of a lake.

Also on my rudder the down haul doesn't seem to work smoothly. Is it possible for someone to take a photo of theirs to compare?
