Hello all, first time poster, average club sailor, looking to attend my first open at Brightlingsea in May. I have a couple of questions which I hope someone can help me answer.
I've joined the NCSA, but cannot find out how to enter the event. Do I need to do so beforehand or are many just turn up, pay and sail? The events page has the date and location but no details of how to enter. The Brightlingsea SC web page does not have an online entry page. 2. I'm used to sailing on a small pond, and all marks are visible. I've been warned that in some events you cannot see the next mark and are instead given a compass bearing. The only compass I have is a boy scout map reading compass so will need to look for a proper marine compass. Given many of these are £200+ does anyone have any recommendations for less expensive ones? Thanks in advance, hopefully meet some of you in Brightlingsea! Steve, Winder Mk1, 5417
Thank-you Oliver. I've since contacted the event organisers and they have let me know they will allow entries on the day.
Good comments about the compass also, I'll just probably be following everyone else until I can see the mark anyway!
Hi Steve, good to hear you are look at travelling to the open at Brightlingsea I’m sure it will be a great event and a good one to pick as your first.
With the entry Brightlingsea normally opens a early entry for there events so it will be worth keeping an eye on there website and there might be something posted on Facebook closer to the time, entries are usually accepted on the day as well.
With regards to the compass I wouldn’t worry too much about it usually with good visibility you can just about make out the windward mark and sometimes with a rib places next to it. After a couple of minutes on starboard and a couple on port for example you’ll definitely be able to see the windward mark.
Hope this helps, happy to answer anymoe questions.
