Helm Weight for M3 mast topic

Cliff Harrison posted this 28 April 2019

I am looking for my first Solo, and find the market a little confusing. With a weight of 90Kg I have been told I need a Selden Cumulus mast, but there do not seem to be many about with this mast. Are there any other masts that would suit my weight? As I am only interested in club racing, would it make much difference?

I have seen one for sale with an M3 mast, but can find no information about this mast in a Solo?

Thanks in advance,

Back in the day M3 was my favourite mast . Great for the 90kg plus helm. As Guy says not really much difference between D+, Cumulus or M3. For information the M7 replaced the M3 in the 90s. At the time I found the M7 more flexible and stuck with an M3. Tony

Hi Cliff, To be honest, I'm not sure there is a massive difference between the performance of the Cumulus (and M3) and the D+. The vast majority of the Open meeting fleet use the D+ or the M7 with the weight range being mid-late 70kgs to 90kg plus.

There are plenty of "heavier" sailors racing with the D+ and they are more than competitive with that setup.

As Ian has alluded too, improving your boat handling and racing skills (and fitness) will likely have a far greater impact on your results :-) That said, one of the softer sections like the sleeved C wouldn't be ideal/too bendy for your weight.

Hope that's of some help. Cheers, G 5691

I think Superspar M3 was discontinued some years ago, but thinking back to my Fireball days, it was on the stiff side and similar to the M2 . I would have thought it fine for someone heavier.

And as ever, spending time practicing will have as much effect as mast choice in many cases.
