Solo National Championships and Nations Cup

East Lothian Yacht Club 2nd – 7th August

Sponsored by Winder Boats, Allen Brothers Ltd and North Sails

Day 1

70 entrants were greeted to glorious sunshine and a Force 5 gusting 7 on the harbour wall. Race Officer Bill Roberts wisely decided to postpone the start for 2 hours, allowing racing to go ahead in a reduced Force 4 gusting 5.

Race 1; City of Plymouth Trophy

A port biased line, with a desire by the fleet to be out of the tide, led to 4 general recalls under the black flag, before the race finally got under way. Charlie Cumberley (Teign Corinthian SC) took and early lead which he held to the end, however places behind him were hotly contested with finally Robbie Wilson (Wormit SC) taking 2nd and Steve Cockerill (Stokes Bay SC) 3rd.

Race 2; Jack Holt Trophy

A change of course from Trapezoid to Olympic caught some competitors by surprise, missing the windward spreader mark. A longer run was also made more exciting by a slight increase in wind strength.
Andy Davies (Chase SC) took an early lead however in taking a flier on the second beat, went out to the right, allowing Jim Hunt (Sutton SC) through to take the lead, which he held to the finish. Andy held on to take 2nd place from Charlie Cumberly who finished 3rd after overhauling several boats.

After two Races the top overall positions are
1st Charlie Cumberly
2nd Jim Hunt
3rd Andy Davies
4th Steve Cockerill
5th Alister Morley
6th Kevan Gibb
7th Lee Sydenham
8th Simon Hoult
9th Andrew Bonsey
10th Ian Pinnell

Our thanks to Fotoboat who are covering the event, and who assure us they have some great photographs from day 1.

Day 2

Sailors were greeted by another day of champagne sailing conditions, and with the wind from the east a nice swell provided some great surfing conditions.

Race 3 Brixham YC Trophy
In a repeat of yesterday most players picked the committee boat end to start, which resulted in the one and only general recall of the day. In the restart, Andy Davies took the lead early on after tacking inshore straight away and was never caught, winning the race by a huge margin. Both Charlie Cumbley and Jim Hunt were blacked flagged in this race, with Robbie Wilson taking 2nd place and Ian Pinnell 3rd.

Race 4 Association Cup
Whilst most of the fleet tried for the Committee boat end again, Charlie Cumbley starting a third of the way down the line went left, and then tacked onto a lifter and crossed the fleet. He was never caught, however the following pack fought long and hard for 2nd and 3rd positions, and after redress for damage caused in a collision, Robbie Wilson and Andrew Bonsey shared 2nd place with 2.5 points and Jim Hunt in 4th.

Day 3 5th August

Race 5 Mountfield Cup

After a morning of rain squalls the weather settled in time to allow a good race into a F2-3 Easterly. A slightly choppy sea on top of a reasonable swell made the first beat challenging, with Alister Morley first round the windward mark, closely followed by Charlie Cumbley.

Charlie managed to obtain an overlap on Alister at third mark, and took the lead, never to be challenged.

With a building swell the reach across the bottom of the trapezoid course gave some exciting surfing, with many places won and lost.

Race 6 Severn Sailboats Trophy

With a large front moving through the area, the wind became very variable, both in direction and strength, and after 5 recalls the race was eventually abandoned.

A pod of at least 6 dolphins gave a great display of how to surf properly to a lucky few helms whilst waiting for the conditions to settle between starts.

Helms are very grateful for the Sponsors prizes, which are being distributed day by day from the bottom of the fleet upwards.

Day 4 5th August

Race 7 Portlemouth Trophy

Following a quiet morning the wind steadily built from the west to give a solid Force 4-5 by the time racing was due to start. Sailing in the West sailing area, to minimise the affects of the Law, gave competitors a short chop up the beat.

To a large cheer from the Committee boat, the race got away on the first attempt, despite considerable bunching at the pin end.

Those that went hard left from the pin rounded the windward mark first being lifted along the shoreline. Jim Hunt rounding 1st

First over the line was Charlie Cumbley, 2nd Andy Davies and 3rd Robbie Wilson

Race 8 Gosling Dinghy Craft Trophy

Unsettled wind direction led to a number of false starts and a long delay between races. However once away, the race followed the previous pattern but this time
Robbie Wilson took the bullet, with Charlie 2nd and Jim 3rd.

The evenings entertainment was provide by Vince Horey and Pieter Jongjans who joined the locals in the annual Law Race, Pieter doing particularly well with a race time of 25 mins.

Solo National Championships and Nations Cup

East Lothian Yacht Club 2nd – 7th August

Sponsored by Winder Boats, Allen Brothers Ltd and North Sails

Day 5 6th August

Race 9 River Dart Cup

A gloriously sunny morning promoted a light sea breeze from the east by the time boats started to launch.

After a delay to allow the wind to settle, racing started in a steady F2.

With a long beat, it paid to bang a corner, and there appeared to be little difference which way you went.

At the end of the race it was Charlie Cumbley 1st, with Chris Brown 2nd and Ian Pinnell 3rd.

Race 10 SB Marine Trophy

With conditions remaining stable for the 2nd race, a number of recalls, under a black flag, were caused by an impatient fleet. At the windward mark it was Robbie Wilson in front, having established a good lead, and was never challenged. Second position was strongly contested but at the end of the race Charlie had secured 2nd place with Alister Morley 3rd.

Overall results to date and subject to Protest with two discards to count are as follows with full results available on East Lothians YC web site.elyc.org.uk
